Tom Harkin: It’s Going To Be A Bumpy Ride To November

Like a pilot preparing the cabin for turbulence, Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA) told reporters to expect a bumpy ride in the final sprint to Election Day.

He does expect President Obama to stick the landing, however.

On an Obama campaign conference call about farm policy Tuesday, Harkin said the boost Mitt Romney got on the Denver debate stage is real, but not entirely unexpected.

“Everyone agrees Gov. Romney got a bounce out of that last debate. I think that’s kind of a well-accepted fact,” Harkin said. “But I have every confidence that in the end people will vote to continue a steady course of improvement. I think you’re going to see this thing bounce around a little bit, but in the final tally, I believe President Obama will come up with the requisite number of electoral votes.”

Harkin told reporters the state of the polls — which show Romney taking a slight lead nationally following the first debate — was expected. “We always knew it was going to be a close race,” he said.
