President Obama leads Republican nominee Mitt Romney by 4 points in Ohio, 49 percent to Romnet 45 percent, according to a new poll from Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling (PPP). Obama nearly hits the 50 percent mark in the horse race number even though a slight purality of likely voters, 49 percent, disapprove of the job he’s doing. Forty-eight percent approve of Obama’s job performance.
“Barack Obama is still the favorite in Ohio,” Dean Debnam, President of PPP said in a statement. “But it’s still a relatively close race there and a Mitt Romney comeback isn’t out of the question. It’s too early for Democrats to be celebrating or Republicans to be conceding.”
Neither candidate has completely locked down their base — 12 percent Republicans say they are voting for Obama and 10 percent of Democrats are going for Romney. But despite the fact that 52 percent of independents disapprove of Obama’s job perforamnce, he nearly splits their vote — 41 percent of unaffiliated voters are backing the president while 42 percent are in Romney’s camp.
Obama has had an excellent run in the polls of Ohio over the last two weeks and leads Romney by 6.5 percent in the PollTracker Average of the state.
