The Obama campaign launched a new ad this weekend in eastern and southern Ohio specifically pushing back on ads from the Romney campaign which charge that Obama is waging a war on coal, reports the Cleveland Plain Dealer. The ad references Romney’s overseas investments and uses footage from 2003 to claim that Romney is “Not One of Us.”
“Seen these new ads, where Mitt Romney says he’s a friend of coal country?” the narrator says. “This is the guy who wants to keep tax breaks for companies that ship American jobs overseas. The same guy who had a Swiss bank account and millions in tax havens like Bermuda and the Caymans.”
The ad closes on footage of Romney outside a coal plant in 2003 saying: “I will not create jobs or hold jobs that kill people. And that plant, that plant kills people.”
Chris Maloney, the Romney campaign’s spokesman in Ohio, responded to the ad in a statement to the Plain Dealer: “It remains a widely accepted fact by Democrats and Republicans alike that President Obama has spent the past four years waging a war on coal that has devastated middle class families and coal communities across the Midwest.”
