David Axelrod, senior adviser to the Obama campaign, defended the campaign over false allegations from Mitt Romney that the Obama campaign wants to take early voting privileges away from military service members in an interview on “Fox News Sunday.” As TPM reported, the Obama campaign’s lawsuit in Ohio seeks to expand the early voting privileges of service members to all voters, not take them away from anyone.
Asked by host Chris Wallace if he believed that the military deserve special consideration, Axelrod responded strongly. “I absolutely do and the way you stated it and the way frankly governor Romney has stated it is completely false and misleading,” Axelrod said.
He went on to explain what the lawsuit is actually trying to accomplish:
What that lawsuit calls for is not to deprive the military of the right to vote on the final weekend of the campaign. Of course they should have that right. What that suit is about is whether the rest of Ohio should have the same right.
Finally, Axelrod accused Romney of wanting to deprive Ohioans the right to vote.
And I think it’s shameful that Gov. Romney would hide behind our servicemen and women to try and win a lawsuit to deprive other Ohioans — deprive other Ohioans of the right to vote.
