Top Mitt Romney surrogate John Sununu defended the candidate’s decision to not relase tax returns earlier than 2010, saying it would be a boon for Democrats.
Sununu said that, given Romney’s wealth, the 12 years of tax returns Democrats have demanded “would be about six feet of returns in which they can find whatever in it they want to use as a distraction.”
“Frankly, if he releases 12, they’re going to ask for 20,” he said. “There was a movie called ‘The Neverending Story’ and I think the issue falls into that category.”
Sununu said the Obama camapign was “clearly and unequivocally a bunch of liars,” for suggesting that Romney might not have paid taxes in one or more years, saying Romney would have been investigated by the IRS if that were true. Some observers have speculated that by writing off investment losses in a given year — all perfectly legal — it’s possible Romney could have reduced his tax rate below the 13.9 percent he paid in 2010 and perhaps wiped it out entirely.
