The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee will file a Federal Election Commission complaint on Monday alleging three GOP outside spending groups are in violating federal law reports the New York Times. The groups named in the complaint, Crossroads GPS, Americans for Prosperity and the 60 Plus Association, are 501(c)(4) groups, which keep their donors anonymous.
The complaint alleges that the groups are dedicating a majority of their resources to the 2012 election, despite the fact that they are supposed to operate as issues-oriented nonprofit groups. Crossroads GPS, for example, announced last week a $25 million ad campaign against President Obama. The complaint calls for the groups to be reclassified as political committees and thus have their donor lists made public.
Any investigation is unlikely to have an impact this election cycle. But Democrats hope potential GOP donors will be scared away by the prospect of having their names revealed.
