Google unveiled its first ever solely Google-designed and built hardware device, the Google Nexus Q, a home media center, at its I/O developers conference Wednesday. The device publicly outed by The New York Times in advance of the unveiling.
The Nexus Q, a small black sphere that connects to a user’s modem either via an ethernet cable or wirelessly, streams multimedia content purchase from Google’s Play online store to Google Android tablets and smartphones, or displays it on a user’s connected, separately purchased TV and provides audio through connected, separately purchased speakers. It also allows multiple users to engage with it at once, adding songs from their Android devices to common playlists, for example.
The device costs $299 and is available for purchase now on Google Play and will ship within 2 to 3 weeks. Here’s a Google video ad for the device.
