White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters Tuesday that Donald Trump’s continued pushing of the birther theory — and Mitt Romney’s decision to stand by Trump despite it — was a question of “judgment” for Romney.
“The judgment that the president makes and I think broadly, the judgement that every candidate for higher office has to make is how are you going to run your campaign?” Carney said in response to a question about Trump. “I think you recall that in the 2008 race, Sen. John McCain … made a decision not to ally with the extreme elements in his own party. I think some have criticized that of late, which I find a little surprising.”
