On the heels of Facebook’s announcement Friday that it would consider suing employers who demanded Facebook login credentials from employees or perspective hires, a spokesperson for Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) released the following statement to TPM.
“Senator Blumenthal is deeply troubled by reports of employers asking job applicants and current employees to surrender the login information for their social media accounts. He believes the practice is an unreasonable invasion of privacy and he is working on legislation that would ban it.”
Blumenthal first told POLITICO on Wednesday he was working on a bill to outlaw the practice. The ACLU on Friday applauded Facebook for taking steps to protect user information but also said it wouldn’t be enough and that Congress needed to pass legislation to stop employers from prying into Facebook profiles.
