On Meet the Press Sunday, Rick Santorum said he may end up with more delegates than news agencies currently estimate. He said that due to the nuanced rules over caucuses and delegates, “news agency apportioned delegates..have nothing to do with the reality of where the delegates are going to be.”
When it comes to states with caucuses, their delegates are apportioned at state conventions. Santorum argued Sunday that he would likely get a lot more of those delegates from caucus states than estimates based on the popular vote predict. He gave Iowa as an example of this.
You know, we barely won Iowa by 34 votes. But they had their conventions yesterday. We’re going to win the vast majority of delegates in the state of Iowa but nobody has that in their count. They have us winning by one vote. That’s not going to be the case when the delegates from these caucuses are actually elected.
Santorum added on two additional factors, unbound delegates and superdelegates, to drive home his point that Romney’s delegate lead is less impressive than it now appears.
