A Reuters/Ipsos poll released Monday shows a majority of Americans support President Obama’s apology to President Hamid Karzai following a Koran-burning incident that sparked violent protests in Afghanistan. Among those surveyed, 56 percent backed Obama and 23 percent disagreed with the apology.
The presidential candidates, except Ron Paul, have roundly criticized Obama for apologizing to Karzai, a move Obama was aimed at quelling the violence taking place.
Support for the apology largely fell along party lines, via Reuters:
The poll, conducted from March 2 to March 5, showed that far more Democrats supported Obama’s apology, with 76 percent of them saying Obama made the right decision.
Only 37 percent of Republicans backed the apology, and almost half said Obama was not right to do so. Some 53 percent of independents supported the apology.
