Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney suggested sending benefits granted to military veterans be administered by state governments, rather than the current federal system. The feds would provide money, Romney said, and states would then take care of their veteran through their own programs.

“Let’s take the money that we use to help people that have real needs and instead of having it all administered by the federal government who thinks they know how to do everything, let’s take that money, bundle it, south carolina’s fair share, send it to them and say, you care for your people in the way you feel best. Let’s do that at the state level,” he said.

It would be an interesting proposal, considering that most state governments have had to cut their budgets after seeing shortfalls in the years after the 2008 financial crisis and tax revenues dropped off.
