A new poll of Florida conducted by Suffolk University for 7NEWS (WSVN-Miami) shows former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney with 25 percent of the voter in a GOP field trial heat, and businessman Herman Cain at 24 percent. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is third with 11 percent, and the rest of the Republican candidates are in single digits.

The survey also shows that if Sen Marco Rubio (R-FL) was added to the GOP ticket as the Vice Presidential nominee, he would provide a boost to a generic Republican candidate. But in simple head-to-heads, the poll shows that only Romney can tie Obama in a matchup, while Cain is three points back of the President, Gingrich seven and Perry twelve.

“Marco Rubio secures Florida which, along with Ohio, is one of the two most important swing states to win,“ said David Paleologos, director of the Political Research Center at Boston’s Suffolk University in a release. “He also adds potential strength in states like New Mexico, Texas, California, Arizona, and Nevada, which have high Hispanic populations.”
