Real estate mogul Donald Trump said during Tuesday’s Republican presidential debate that he was open to the idea of closing down “areas” of the Internet to prevent the Islamic State terror group from accessing it.
Trump said in response to a question from one of the debate moderators that he would censor the Internet from IS. Trump said the terror group was using the Internet better than the United States and that he would recruit people from Silicon Valley to prevent terrorists from getting online.
“We should be using our brilliant people, our most brilliant minds to figure out a way that ISIS can not use the Internet. We should be able to penetrate to find where ISIS is,” Trump said. “And we can do that if we use our good people.”
Debate moderator Wolf Blitzer asked Trump to clarify if that meant he was open to closing parts of the Internet.
“I would certainly be open to closing areas where we were at war with somebody,” Trump responded. “I sure as hell don’t want to let people that want to kill us and kill our nation use our Internet. Yes sir, I am.”
