After he was done gushing over the new Star Wars trailer, Stephen Colbert turned his attention to the outrage over five St. Louis Rams players who raised their hands in solidarity with protestors in Ferguson, Mo. during Sunday’s game.
“Thankfully, when the St. Louis police see young black men with their hands in the air, they come out firing,” he said on Monday’s episode of “The Colbert Report.”
The host was referring to the St. Louis Police Association, which on Monday condemned the players’ gesture as “tasteless, offensive and inflammatory.”
Colbert jumped in: “Yes, it is tasteless and offensive to see this at an NFL game—which reminds me, welcome back Ray Rice, we’ve missed you!”
Colbert was referring to Rice’s successful appeal that allowed him to return to the league, after the Baltimore Ravens terminated his contract in September over leaked footage that showed him knocking out his then-fiancee.
Colbert finished up the segment with a tutorial on what hand gestures are appropriate and safe to make while black in America.
“Avoid jazz hands! Because jazz hands lead to heroin hands,” he said.
“And no ‘I’m a little tea pot’ — you’re just asking for a cop to yell ‘he’s got a spout!’ and start firing,” he added.
