Voter Who Questioned Clinton’s Honesty Says Sanders Got Him Into Politics

Taylor Gipple, who was introduced as “leaning” toward Sen. Bernie Sanders at the Democratic town hall Monday and asked rival Hillary Clinton about her honesty, wrote in an op-ed to The Des Moines Register a month earlier that Sanders got him into politics.

Gipple was introduced by town hall moderator Chris Cuomo as a “first time caucusgoer, leaning Sanders.” Gipple then launched Clinton a whopping question.

“It feels like there’s a lot of young people, like myself, who are very passionate supporters of Bernie Sanders and I just don’t see the same enthusiasm from younger people for you,” he said to Clinton. “In fact, I’ve heard from quite a few people my age who think you’re dishonest. But I’d like to hear from you and why you feel the enthusiasm isn’t there.”

Gipple wrote in his op-ed to the Register, published December 2015, that he had been underwhelmed by politics in the past, until he saw Sanders throw support behind gay rights and criticize campaign finances.

“I’m hoping that people my age will begin to educate themselves, so they can find a candidate who they agree with and will also come to realize the importance of participating in the caucus and election cycle as a whole,” he wrote.

Clinton responded to Gipple at the town hall by saying that she was happy to see young people involved in the election “in any way.”
