The group had gathered in a downtown Sochi restaurant, about 30km (21miles) from where the Winter Olympics are being held. They ran out of the restaurant wearing brightly colored clothes and ski masks and were set upon by about a dozen Cossacks, who are used by police authorities in Russia to patrol the streets. A diplomat at the Russian embassy in Washington, D.C. wrote various sexist comments about the members of the band Pussy Riot, according to emails obtained by Buzzfeed.

Both the Russian diplomat and the U.S. official who gave the 2012 emails to Buzzfeed were granted anonymity by the outlet.

During correspondence between the Russian and American official, the Russian diplomat brought up Pussy Riot, who were on trial for their protest at a Moscow cathedral.

“Generally, I am of the opinion that those pussies are simply not happy in their sexual life. And that makes them riot. They simply need a good f..k, not SIZO. Unfortunately, we don’t have such a capital punishment in our criminal law,” the diplomat wrote. “SIZO” is a Russian pre-trial detention center.

In a later email, the Russian official wrote about “homosexual authoritarism [sic]” in the U.S.

“Why most of Russia watchers in Washington DC are indeed Russia haters? Probably because this is a Cold War legacy. You studied USSR to know your enemy. Now the only way to make Russia a living is to help hating it – be it Vladimir Putin or human rights. Actually I was thinking about homosexual authoritarism [sic] threatening America. Here is a good piece on Arizona buzz,” he wrote in an email titled “gay SOS.”

The diplomat also had some praise for Stalin.

“One thing about Stalin is that with him Russian state was at its highest,” he wrote in a 2013 email.
