Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC), the congresswoman who reversed her stance multiple times on a recent anti-abortion bill, suggested House Republicans’ trouble with moving the bill through the chamber is just a matter of “growing pains.”
Ellmers, along with Rep. Jackie Walorski (R-IN), raised objections to the bill over a provision which requires victims of sexual assault to report the assault to authorities before seeking an abortion. Ellmers and Walorski removed their names as co-sponsors from the bill. But on Wednesday, Ellmers said she would be voting to support the bill.
“It’s unfortunate the way it played out,” Ellmers said Thursday according to The Washington Examiner on Thursday. “I think we’re all just going through some growing pains.”
House Republican leaders on Wednesday night pulled the 20-week abortion ban bill because they couldn’t reconcile differences some House Republicans had with the rape provision in the legislation. House Republican leadership instead held a vote on legislation outlawing funding for abortions.
