House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI), who will serve as the Republican National Convention chair in July, said on Tuesday that GOP lawmakers should attend the convention regardless of who the party nominates to be president.

A few Republican senators up for re-election in 2016 have said they may not attend the July convention, and CNN asked Ryan if he was fine with that.

“I’ve never heard that before. People will make the decision on what they want to do,” Ryan responded. “I think if you were planning on going to the convention, you should go.”

When CNN mentioned that Republicans up for re-election might be worried about being tied to the presidential nominee, Ryan replied, “Oh, I don’t think so.”

“I think that we should go. This is our convention making our nominee, so I think everybody should participate,” he added. “It could be a great historical exercise. I mean, it could be something you’ll remember the rest of your life, so I would go if I were, if I had a chance to go.”
