Pope Francis has invited Patti Smith, the “Godmother of Punk,” to perform at this year’s Vatican Christmas concert, according to The Independent.
Smith will be one of 18 acts to perform Dec. 13 at Rome’s Conciliation Auditorium, the British newspaper reported. She met Francis at the Vatican in 2013 (pictured above) and said that, while she is not Catholic, she found the new pontiff “very interesting.”
Smith, a heavily influential figure in New York City’s 1970s punk rock scene, is known for, among other things, the lyric “Jesus died for somebody’s sins, but not mine” in her song, “Gloria.”
According to The Independent, some Catholic groups are already protesting her planned appearance.

The best line in this article. I’m still laughing.
This man is way too cool. I’m proud again to be Catholic.
And seemingly surrounded himself with great advisers.
Not Catholic, but having spent so much time during teen years among the big Catholic family of my two best friends-- I know it’s a rejuvenating time for that faith.

I’ve got little use for loudmouth bigots of any creed, but I’ve always thought actual practicing Christians, the quiet kind who mostly strive to love other people without judging them, were pretty easy to take. This Pope, in addition to being Catholic, would seem also to his great credit to be a real Christian. Long life to him. Cool guy too.
Maybe Jesus was a hippie with some punk tendencies? If anyone has the inside on this, it’s the Pope, yo.
This Pope is gonna be out riding a Harley soon, I just know it.
