FILE - In this Sept. 7, 2011, file photo Republican Senator of Utah Orrin Hatch, 78, serving in his sixth term on Capitol Hill, calls on the president to kick start a dormant U.S. trade agenda in Washington. Every handshake counts in Utah’s unique nominating system, even for a senator seeking his seventh term. To avoid a primary, Hatch needs at least 60 percent of the 4,000 delegates expected to vote. In spite of Hatch having spent more than $5 million since the beginning of 2011 to defend his seat, the fate of one of the most powerful senators in the country is coming down to just a few hundred votes. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) devoted a speech Friday to discuss just how little he thinks of Democrats and liberals.

According to the Huffington Post, the Utah Republican told attendees at the Federalist Society’s annual conference that he looks forward to giving Democrats “a taste of their own medicine” after the GOP takes back the White House in 2016.

Hatch said he’d prefer to have the Senate keep the new filibuster rules that were passed by Democrats last year to “teach those blunderheads that they made a big mistake.”

And Hatch showed that jokes about progressives will always do well at a conservative legal confab.

“I get a big kick out of them using the word ‘progressive,'” Hatch said, as quoted by HuffPost. “My gosh, they’re just straight old dumb-ass liberals anyway.”
