Roger Wicker, R-Miss., Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., and Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn of Texas, speaks with reporters on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2016, following a closed-door policy meeting. Senate Republicans, most vocally McConnell, are facing a high-stakes political showdown with President Barack Obama sparked by the recent death of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. Republicans controlling the Senate — which must confirm any Obama appointee before the individual is seated on the court — say that the decision is too important to be determined by a lame-duck president. The New York Times editorial board asserted Wednesday that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and his fellow Republicans seem “to have lost touch with reality and the Constitution” when it comes to filling the Supreme Court vacancy.

The editorial board said statements by McConnell and Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-TX) about refusing to hold hearings on a potential nominee or refusing to even meet with one, as is customary, were “twisted.”

It was also “preposterous” for McConnell to say President Barack Obama was “causing a ‘bitter struggle’ by nominating someone” to the Supreme Court, they wrote.

“Only two Republican senators, Mark Kirk of Illinois and Susan Collins of Maine, were brave enough to say that they would vote on President Obama’s nominee,” the editorial board wrote. “This is what passes for moderation in today’s G.O.P.: simply stating a willingness to do the job you were elected to do.”

Yes, please. Keep them on the ropes.

  5. Well, if we have Democratic Presidents for long enough the entire Supreme Court could die off.
