National Geographic magazine will begin to operate on a for-profit basis under a partnership with 21st century Fox, an empire controlled by media mogul Rupert Murdoch, according to a report Wednesday in the Washington Post. The change is expected later this year.

The monthly magazine has been a nonprofit publication since its founding in 1888, according to the Post.

The National Geographic Society, which operated the publication, will remain a non-profit organization, according to the newspaper.

The Society’s partnership with Fox will be called National Geographic Partners and will include the National Geographic cable channel and the Society’s other media assets.

The National Geographic Partners will be governed by a board comprised of an equal number of representatives from Fox and National Geographic, according to the report.

Fox will own 73 percent of the partnership and will pay $725 million to the Society for its stake, pushing the Society’s endowment to more than $1 billion, according to the report.

  1. I look forward to the inevitable Nat Geo documentary on the fallacy of global warming/climate change. Footage of polar bears and penguins sunning themselves on a warm, sandy beach. Happy island natives proclaiming having the shoreline in their living room means a shorter walk for a swim. Should make for interesting television.

  2. But will they still show aboriginal boobs?

  3. And thus ends any and all hope of National Geographic ever returning to the quality of its former years.

Another great institution flushed down the Murdoch shit-hole. Say hello to the Wall Street Journal while you’re down there, NatGeo.

  4. So now, when giggling little boys pull out a Nat Geo to look at the boobies, they’ll be treated to captions under the pictures such as “This woman is a savage, as evidenced by her complete lack of shame and modesty.”

  5. Ha…beat me to it…I have to wonder if the Nat Geo boobies are a right of passage for Amurikan boys lol
