The New York man who accidentally shot himself and a friend over the weekend while showing off his gun inside a busy restaurant now faces charges, the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reported.
John Cassata, 70, was charged Tuesday with felony reckless endangerment and misdemeanor assault, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
Cassata accidentally fired his handgun when he took it out to show friends, sending a bullet through his hand and leg. The round ultimately grazed one of his friend’s ankles, according to the sheriff’s office.
A witness had told TV station WHAM that there was a family with small children near Cassata’s table when the incident occurred.
Cpl. John Heifer, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office, told the newspaper that Cassata had a permit for his weapon. Cassata’s weapon has since been confiscated and his permit has been put on hold.
