Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) said Tuesday in an interview on Fox News that he thought Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) would have enough votes to be his successor.
Boehner also said that he thought Ryan would “have an announcement” Tuesday evening.
Reporting from various sources through the day Tuesday indicated that Ryan was expected to meet Tuesday evening privately with some of the House GOP conference, including some of the members of the Freedom Caucus. A spokesperson for the committee Ryan chairs said earlier in the day he did not “expect a final decision tonight.”
Despite an endorsement from some GOPers, Ryan has repeatedly said that he would not run for the position.
“I’m not sure what the announcement is going to be,” Boehner said on Fox. “But if he does it, I think he’ll have the support of the members.”
Boehner had previously endorsed Ryan for the job.
“I think Paul would be a great speaker,” Boehner reiterated on Fox. “I think he has the skills to do the job and I think he also has the credentials to reach out to traditional conservative organizations to help bridge the gap that we have in the House today.”
Is this a shotgun
weddingspeakership?“I think he also has the credentials to reach out to traditional conservative organizations to help bridge the gap that we have in the House today.”
Let that sink in for a second and you’ll see it…
This is excellent news. Speakership means the end of the last of the Republican “young guns” that were gonna dominate politics after 2010.
There is exactly one person in Washington who believes Paul Ryan can be speaker without negotiating with – and ultimately being held hostage by – the Freedom Caucus.
That person is Paul Ryan.
If he takes the job, we’ll know when they release white doves and smoke pours out of the chimney.
