Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank believes Hillary Clinton won the first Democratic presidential primary debate because she proved herself to be a “man among boys.”

In a column published late Tuesday, Milbank argued that in his judgment Clinton came off presidential where none of her male rivals did. Milbank wrote that Clinton easily brushed off criticism of her vote in favor of the Iraq War and insinuations about her “ethical standards” following months of reports on federal inquiries into the private email account she used during her tenure as secretary of state.

“She was, in short, a man among boys,” he wrote. “And that’s why the debate was so important to Clinton. She may have had a rough time as the Democrats’ presidential front-runner, but her advantages in experience and composure were clear when she shared a stage with her rivals for the first time.”
