Stephen Colbert said during Monday’s episode of “The Colbert Report” that he fully supports his “secessionist brothers” in Scotland who are voting on independence this week.

“That’s right, Scotland could actually secede,” Colbert said. “I didn’t even know they had slaves.”

He discussed some of the issues that would arise from Scottish independence, one of which is whether Scotland will be able to control its own tax and social security rates and make decisions about public spending. Colbert noted that this was “an emotionally charged struggle that traces its roots all the way to the days of William Wallace.”

He then played a clip of Mel Gibson in “Braveheart” shouting his infamous words, with a twist.

“They may take our lives,” shouted a voiceover, “but they’ll never take our freedom to calculate pension benefits based on inflation or earnings, whichever is higher!”

“FREEDOM!!!” shouted Colbert, with raised arms.

You’d think with all the royal coverage this potentially major shift within a major ally, if only for the national security implications, would have gotten more attention before now from our media.
By the clock, Colbert’s segment likely surpassed the major network ‘focus’.

  2. Problem is, we no longer have journalists who understand issues outside of 'Murkuh. We have communications majors who get a migrane when asked what the capital of Massachusetts is.

  3. Wait, wait- Plymouth, right? Bunker Hill?

    Springfield- that’s it!

  4. “But Rabobank estimates a newly independent Scotland could be shut out of the EU for at least two years after a formal split from the rest of the UK in March 2016.”

That’s alright. “10 year-old” just becomes “12 year-old”, and so on. In the mean time, there’s always Irish Whiskey, or Bourbon.
