Stephen Colbert made a startling confession during Thursday night’s “The Colbert Report.”
“For nine years, I’ve been telling you I’m an independent conservative,” he said. “But, that was a lie.”
“I’m sorry, I thought I was fooling everyone,” Colbert continued. “But last night when I came out to my family as openly Republican, they said they always knew. They could tell.”
Colbert noted that since coming out, he’d been inspired to “encourage all closeted Republicans who are afraid to be themselves to join” him.
“I’m looking at you, Papa Bear,” he said, before playing several clips of Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly claiming he was an Independent.
“Okay, girlfriend,” Colbert said. “Whatever helps you cry yourself to sleep at night. We can talk when you’re ready.”
Thursday’s segment is yet another episode in the ongoing Colbert vs. O’Reilly saga.

Love it. Colbert beating on O’Reilly like he was a drum. The schoolyard bully gets his face ground in the dirt again because he was too stupid and arrogant to realize what he was getting into. Yosemite Sam taking on Bugs Bunny. Sometimes sheer ill nature is not enough to win a fight with, Bill, you dumb bastard. Declare surrender now or the beatings will continue.
Coy conservatives love to play the “Independent” card to bolster their alleged “objectivity”, and to distance themselves from the most embarrassing antics of the GOP.
As the GOP has abandoned any pretense of a coherent policy, it’s getting a lot more difficult for these “Independants” to define the differences, and maintain the illusion.
When you say you are an independent it just means you are ashamed of admitting you are a republican. No real democrat is ashamed of admitting who they are. I say all independents come out of the closet and admit who you really are. I never understood saying you are an independent. It seems to be taking the cowards way out of being committed to something, anything.
Brillo certainly has allowed Colbert to get under his thin skin . . .
