Fox News analyst Brit Hume tore into Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) on Monday night for refusing to denounce Donald Trump’s inflammatory statements, and then pouncing on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) over the Republican leader’s move to advance legislation on the Ex-Im Bank.

“The first thing you need to know about Ted Cruz’s assault on Mitch McConnell is that it’s not really about Ted Cruz and Mitch McConnell — it’s about Ted Cruz and Donald Trump,” Hume said on Fox News’ “Special Report.”

Hume noted that Trump quickly passed Cruz in presidential polls, and that Cruz refused to condemn Trump’s remarks on Sen. John McCain (R-AZ).

“He insisted his stance was born of fidelity to the so-called 11th commandment, made famous by Ronald Reagan, ‘Thou shalt not speak ill of any fellow Republican,'” Hume said.

The Fox analyst then suggested that Cruz’s fight with McConnell in the Senate was an attempt to make headlines and bring attention to his presidential campaign.

“Two days later, Cruz was on the Senate floor calling Republican leader McConnell a liar,” Hume said. “It may have shown Cruz to be an obvious hypocrite, but for one day, at least, he trumped Trump, and that means mission accomplished.”

Hume was referring to Cruz’s latest fight with McConnell over the Ex-Im Bank, in which Cruz called McConnell a liar for allowing the reauthorization of the Ex-Im Bank to advance in the Senate.
