The Virginia GOP official who questioned on social media whether Muslims contributed anything to America resigned his position Wednesday night without apologizing for the intolerant comment.

In a Tuesday Facebook post, state Republican Party Treasurer BobFitzsimmonds called President Barack Obama’s Ramadan statement, which thanked Muslims for their contributions to the nation, “nonsense.” He then went on to criticize other religions.

“It seems that no matter how careful I might be, I will periodically give occasion for others to portray the party in a bad light, so long as I am a party official,” Fitzsimmonds wrote in a letter to the state GOP’s central committee, as quoted by The Washington Post. “After discussion with several party leaders it seems clear that I will either need to stop posting on social media or step down from my party office.”

Fitzsimmonds was not apologetic in the letter, according to the Post. He said he would resign as soon as his position is filled, which the Post points out will likely be after a state party meeting on Aug. 16.

Facebook truly is Fitzsimmonds’ weakness. The state GOP official also took heat in February for a post that referred to a female congressional candidate with a slang term for genitalia. He later apologized for that comment.
