Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) was projected to score a sweeping victory in his home state of Vermont in Tuesday’s Democratic presidential primary, according to CNN and MSNBC.

Given his strong lead in state polls ahead of Super Tuesday, the Vermont senator’s win came as little surprise.

Sanders has a long record as a popular politician in the liberal state. He began his political career as the mayor of Burlington, served in the U.S. House for 16 years as Vermont’s sole congressman and was re-elected to the Senate for a second term in 2012 with 71 percent of the vote.

Sanders joked about his support in the state while leaving his Burlington polling location Tuesday morning, telling reporters: “After a lot of deliberation, I know that Bernie Sanders here in Vermont got at least one vote.”
