Though on the sidelines, Trump underscored the power of the moment during the commercial break as Christie walked across the stage to see his wife. Someone grabbed Christie’s arm from behind, and the New Jersey governor turned to see none other than the taunter-in-chief Donald Trump.
“Oh my God. That was brutal,” Trump muttered to Christie on the debate stage, according to someone familiar with the exchange. “Tremendous.”
Even among enemies, there’s a respect for mastery.
As I’ve said, to date Trump and Cruz have been like two contending martial arts or Zen masters in the arts of assholery. Decades of devotion to the craft, an elegant mix of restraint and flurries of violence. Two masters meeting in a battle on the field of destiny. But Trump has thus far shown himself much more adept, as revealed in this confrontation. But even Trump can recognize another master.
