Bruce Braley, D-Iowa, on Capitol Hill in Washington. The first midterm elections since both parties embraced a historic change in campaign finance, and with it a sea of campaign cash, will mean for most voters an avalanche of television ads trying to reach the few able to be swayed and willing to vote. In the nation's closest races for U.S. Senate, that translates into "price per vote" that could easily double what was spent in the 2012 presidential election. (AP Photo/Cliff Owen, File) MORE LESS

Rep. Bruce Braley (D-IA) leads Republican opponent state Sen. Joni Ernst (R) by 5 points in the race for U.S. Senate, his biggest lead in the last few months, according to a new poll.

If the election were held today, 45.3 percent of those polled said they would vote for Braley while 40.5 percent said they would vote for Ernst according to the Loras College Public Opinion Survey Center Poll, a relatively new player in the polling field. Another 14.2 percent said they were undecided.

It’s a shift from a previous Loras poll in June which found Ernst leading Braley 48 percent to 41.7 percent.

It’s also months since the TPM Polltracker average gave Braley a lead that wide. Early in May the Polltracker gave Braley a 5.6 point lead over Ernst.

The new poll was conducted from Sept. 2 to Sept 5 and had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.82 percent for statewide results. Loras used 1200 completed surveys in reporting the poll results.

The TPM Polltracker currently finds Braley with a 3.8 point lead over Ernst.
