Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto leads seven points ahead of incumbent Rep. Joe Heck (R-NV) in a new CNN/ORC poll of the U.S. Senate election in Nevada.

The race to fill Sen. Harry Reid’s (D-NV) seat in the U.S. Senate has yielded contested poll results, and is considered important for Democrats looking to take the senate majority.

Cortez Masto, a former Nevada Attorney General, leads the poll, 52-45 among likely Nevada voters.

CNN/ORC has not previously surveyed Nevada voters about the U.S. Senate election, but a recent CBS/YouGov poll of likely voters showed the two candidates tied at 39 percent.

The CNN/ORC poll was conducted via live telephone interview Oct. 10-15 among 698 likely Nevada voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percent.

TPM’s PollTracker Average for the U.S. Senate election in Nevada shows Cortez Masto leading Heck, 45.2 to 41.2.
