Where Things Stand: DeSantis Is Using His GOP State Legislature To Fix Problems He’s Creating

Alternate headline: Florida State GOPers Are Legislating DeSantis’ 2024 Bid Into Existence

As I was editing my colleague Kaila Philo’s piece here today on the College Board’s biting response to the DeSantis administration’s “PR stunt,” this bit struck me:

“They provided these AP courses for a long time, but you know, there are probably some other vendors who may be able to do that job as good or even a lot better,” the governor said at a news conference in Naples, Florida. He also said that he’s spoken with Florida House Speaker Paul Renner about potential legislation to “re-evaluate how Florida’s doing that.”

State GOP Bill That’ll Make It Easier To Prosecute Voters Lands On DeSantis’s Desk

A GOP-led bill expanding statewide prosecutors’ jurisdiction in Florida just made it to Gov. Ron DeSantis’s desk. The proposal aims to make it easier to prosecute those arrested by DeSantis’s sham election crimes police force, and critics worry it could dissuade some residents from voting.

The Epic List of GOP Social Security Cutters

It’s not just that Republicans have been pushing for cutting or phasing out Social Security and Medicare for decades. They are now demanding that President Biden agree not to say what their policy is. The demand amounts to this: despite the fact that Republicans have been demanding cuts and a phase out for decades and despite the fact they will continue to do so after the current burst of media attention abates, Biden must stop telling voters about this because Republicans have momentarily agreed to deny what their policy is. Indeed, what’s especially weird is how many Republicans can’t help restating their demand for cuts even while denying their demands for cuts.

There are so many examples of this it’s hard to know where to start. But since you have to start somewhere I’ve begun a list of quotes supporting cuts from Republican members who now claim they’ve never supporting cutting Social Security.

Have other examples? Send me them.

Biden Fires Architect Of Capitol After He Is Condemned By House GOP, Everyone Else

President Biden fired the Architect of the Capitol on Monday in a brief, terse letter, bringing an end to the career of a Trump appointee that was mostly illustrious for its vibrant allegations of wrongdoing.

DeSantis’ AP Stunt Was Probably a Set Up

The College Board has now released a letter going after Gov. Ron DeSantis for what they call a “PR stunt” in attacking and at least tentatively refusing to participate in the College Board’s new African-American Studies AP course. The following isn’t a defense of the College Board, which deserves a lot more scrutiny than it gets on topics entirely separate from this course. It’s also not a defense of the curriculum itself. But a mix of speculation and hints lead me to think that this was likely a set up on DeSantis’s part.

Specifically, I suspect that DeSantis knew that these changes were coming and jumped in front of the announcement, knowing that he could then take credit for getting the Board to de-wokenize its offering in the face of DeSantis’s iron will.

The College Board Strikes Back At DeSantis For African American Studies ‘Slander’

The College Board hit back at Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) on Saturday for rejecting their pilot Advanced Placement African American Studies course – and using his public rejection for political gain. DeSantis has since said he will “re-evaluate” the state’s relationship with the nonprofit.

The Various Ways to Eliminate and Gut Social Security

Since we’re talking about whether Social Security survives for future generations, we should start with understanding the various ways the program’s foes propose to limit or get rid of it. Since Social Security is one of America’s most popular government programs, virtually no one says they want to get rid of Social Security. (Except Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT).) Plans to cut it or phase it out entirely are almost all framed as ways to “improve it” or “save” it.

So for instance on CNN this weekend Sen. Mike Rounds (R-SD) compared Social Security to defense spending. “We’re never going to not fund defense. But at the same time we — every single year, we look at how we make it better. And I think it’s about time we start talking about Social Security and making it better.”

So what are the options?

Making Sense Of The Trump Classified Docs Case

A lot of things happened. Here are some of the things. This is TPM’s Morning Memo.

So Many New Developments

Plenty for you to catch up on here:

1. The FBI searched Mike Pence’s Indiana home Friday with his consent and not pursuant to a search warrant. One additional classified document was found.

2. We learned that two Trump lawyers appeared before the grand jury last month:

  • Trump lawyer Evan Corcoran appeared before the DC grand jury investigating the Mar-a-Lago documents back in January, but that only became public Friday.
  • Trump lawyer Christina Bobb also appeared before the grand jury in January.
  • The significance:

3. Trump was subpoenaed again!

  • The key news here is a subpoena of Trump last month that wasn’t previously known publicly but was revealed over the weekend by the Guardian. The subpoena apparently was issued to retrieve an empty manilla folder marked “Classified Evening Briefing” that Trump’s own investigators had previously found and included in their report that was turned over to the the Justice Department.

4. Classified docs were found on a Trump PAC staffer’s laptop and thumbdrive.

  • Also around the same time Trump turned over the empty folder his team also turned over new materials, including a laptop and thumbdrive of a Trump PAC staffer that contained classified info.
  • According to the Guardian:

After the Trump legal team turned over the box of schedules, the sources said, they learned that a junior Trump aide – employed by Trump’s Save America political action committee who acted as an assistant in Trump’s political “45 Office” – last year scanned and uploaded the contents of the box to a laptop.

The junior Trump aide, according to what one of the sources said, was apparently instructed to upload the documents by top Trump aide Molly Michael to create a repository of what Trump was doing while in office and was apparently careless in scanning them on to her work laptop.

If you want to go even deeper on the new developments, EmptyWheel has you covered.

Good Luck With That One!

Jack Smith is racing to “finish up” by this summer, according to the New York Times, which also notes that seems like a “stretch.” For sure.

Try To Keep This On Your Radar

So much Jan. 6-related news, but the Proud Boys trial is still going. Here’s a good catch-up on last week’s trial developments.

OK, Now I’m Curious About The Shootdowns

Morning Memo has mostly been a balloon-free zone since the first incident started a media frenzy two weeks ago.

But the series of three (3!) shootdowns over the weekend of aerial crafts of some sort, with undetermined origins, is more than Morning Memo can ignore.

In case your Super Bowl weekend left you in a news void, here’s what we have:

Fri, Feb. 10, ALASKA: Unidentified object shot down over ice-covered waters off Alaska. According to the National Security Counsel’s John Kirby, it was:

  • “about the size of a small car”
  • “did not appear to be self-maneuvering”
  • “not similar in size or shape” to the Chinese balloon shot down off South Carolina on Feb. 4
  • was flying at 40,000 feet
  • “most likely not a balloon”

Sat, Feb 11, CANADA: Unidentified object shot down over central Yukon about 100 miles from the Alaskan border by the U.S. with the cooperation and urging of Canadian officials, who described it as:

Sun, Feb. 12: MICHIGAN: Unidentified object shot down by the U.S. over Lake Huron and described as:

  • “an octagonal structure with strings hanging off”
  • “no discernible payload”
  • flying at 20,000 feet
  • unlikely to be a balloon`”

More questions than answers on each of these incidents. The US military has heightened its vigilance since the initial balloon incursion, so they may be seeing more radar blips than they noticed before – or these incursions could represent a new initiative by China or others. Or not. Again, more questions than answers, and the questions may change as more information becomes available.

On a lighter note:

Welp …

The 2020 Trump campaign hired a research firm to find proof of election fraud. It found none, but the results were kept secret.

Matt Schlapp Wants To Unmask His Accuser
