After presenting dramatic new footage of the Capitol insurrection, House impeachment managers will finish making their arguments on Thursday, the third day of the trial against former President Trump. They will describe the “harm” inflicted on the country by the insurrection attempt, one aide to House managers said, and will also discuss Trump’s “lack of remorse.”
Managers on Wednesday meticulously laid out how close the pro-Trump mob came to putting lawmakers’ lives in real danger. After the House team wraps up, Trump’s defense team will have a chance to respond.

At least five people died during the events of January 6th on Capitol Hill. More than 100 Capitol Police officers were injured, at least 15 of whom required hospitalization. Two Capitol Police officers took their own lives in the days immediately following the assault, presumably spurred by trauma and/or guilt over the insurrection. But the death of Officer Brian Sicknick has loomed over the events of the January 6th like no other. While others were bludgeoned or attacked and could have died of their injuries the fact that Sicknick did die added a gravity to the events of January 6th it would not, for better or worse, otherwise have had.
Because of this, a new ‘truth movement’ has begun to crop up on the right suggesting Sicknick’s death was unrelated to the insurrection and may even be part of a cover-up to tarnish the reputation of Donald Trump and the MAGA movement. It’s ugly and utterly predictable.

In the Reconstruction era following the Civil War, the Department of Justice was created in part to deliver and oversee equal rights to formerly enslaved Black men and women. This corrective institution was a major step toward building a federal government that protects the civil rights of all its citizens. In the wrong hands, however, the department can be weaponized. Whether through inaction or outright hostility on issues ranging from white-collar crime to mass incarceration, the values animating the nation’s top law enforcement agency matter.
Former President Trump played a pivotal role in the Jan. 6 mob on the Capitol turning violent, the House impeachment managers argued on Thursday, and failing to hold him accountable for his incitement will only encourage Trump to deploy similar tactics in the future.
Five more rioters who attacked the Capitol on Jan. 6 now face federal conspiracy charges and other offenses.
