The Fine Of National Enquirer’s Owner For Trump Scheme Was One Of FEC’s Largest Ever

On Tuesday, the Federal Election Commission unveiled a $187,500 fine it was levying against National Enquirer’s parent company, as part of a settlement with the media company for the 2016 hush money scheme to silence a woman claiming an affair with Donald Trump.

Lawyer’s Controversial Comments To TPM Pop Up Again In Jan. 6 Case

A lawyer’s assertion to TPM last month that many defendants in Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection case were “fucking short-bus people” is still making waves in federal court, with a federal prosecutor arguing Monday that the comments ought not be grounds for splitting up a case involving multiple defendants.

RNC Threatens Debate Boycott If Trump’s Grievances With Format Aren’t Addressed

Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel renewed former President Donald Trump’s grievances about the Commission on Presidential Debates, threatening in a letter to the commission Tuesday to discourage future Republican nominees against participating in presidential debates unless significant changes are made to the commission.

Thunder in the Distance

With Texas Democrats refusing to attend a state legislative session in an effort to block the state’s election crackdown law it reminded TPM Reader MR of a similar instance 18 years ago. It was a story I covered closely at TPM, and MR dropped me a note this morning reminding me. It’s more than just a trip down memory lane. What happened in 2003 in Texas was a preview, prologue to almost everything that would happen over the subsequent two decades. It presaged the debt ceiling hostage taking; it presaged Merrick Garland; and it presaged Donald Trump.

As we know from looking forward to the 2022 midterm, once a decade there’s a federal Census, a reapportionment of congressional seats and redistricting in every state that has more than one representative. It happened in 2010, setting the ground work for Republicans storming back into the majority in the House. Democrats rightly fear something similar will happen next year.
