President Trump took a strikingly more aggressive tone against special counsel Robert Mueller on Thursday, claiming Mueller only got the special counsel gig because of his relationship with former FBI Director James Comey.

Trump also claimed that he had a “business dispute” with Mueller and the special counsel wanted to replace Comey as FBI director after Trump fired him.

“I think he’s totally conflicted because, as you know, he wanted to be the FBI director and I said ‘no,'” Trump said. “But I had a business dispute and he loves Comey. You look at the relationship that those two — so whether it’s love or deep like, but he should — he was conflicted. Look, Robert Mueller should have never been chosen because he wanted the FBI job and he didn’t get it and the next day he was picked as special counsel.”

Trump claimed the special counsel was a “true never Trumper” and “somebody that dislikes Donald Trump.”

“He’s somebody that didn’t get a job that he request that he wanted very badly,” he said.

Trump remarks come just as Mueller publicly said if the special counsel’s office was confident Trump didn’t commit a crime, it would have said so.
