President Donald Trump and Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo are scheduled to grab a bite together on Wednesday afternoon, according to Trump’s schedule.
The two New Yorkers are set to discuss the Gateway Project, which would update the passenger train rails between New York City and Newark, New Jersey. Cuomo confirmed the meeting in a statement, saying the meeting was “not a partisan issue but a practical government necessity.”
Trump and Cuomo have not hidden their public distaste for one another. Most recently, the two got into a spat after Cuomo jabbed Trump when he suggested America “was never that great.”
Cuomo was roundly criticized for the comments and Trump reveled in the bad optics, claiming Cuomo’s “political career is over.”
I don’t trust Cuomo as far as I can throw him. Trump is going to ask for something huge.

Will Cuomo literally arrive with a heavy briefcase and leave without it? The only interest Trump can have in the project is what he and his family are getting out of it.
Well, this is Cuomo’s opportunity to leverage his de facto membership of the GOP into something good for NY. That’s his whole shtick–that he has a foot in both camps and is uniquely productive as a result. (He’s isn’t. He’s uniquely unproductive.) So he’d better not emerge empty-handed (which he will).
The other thing is that NY has billionaires aplenty who have benefited massively from the Trump Tax Scam. They could be made subject to NY taxes that in effect leave them paying Obama-level taxes and transfers their unconscionable federal tax windfall to the NY coffers. But not under Cuomo. We have hedge fundsters and real estate moguls who are sitting on huge piles of loophole tax windfalls while the rest of us are paying our share. But Cuomo is funded by these guys so gives them these massive kickbacks.
And finally, the famously useless and corrupt Port Authority of NY and NJ is responsible for this kind of interstate infrastructure project. It isn’t headed by transportation or urban planning experts. It’s headed by Cuomo’s political donors and henchmen.
