During an interview with Sean Hannity in Texas on Thursday, President Trump reiterated his intentions of using the declaration of a national emergency as a back up plan if negotiations with Congress continue at a stalemate and said he can’t think of a reason not to do it.
“If we don’t make a deal with Congress, most likely I will do that,” he said. “I would actually say I would. I can’t imagine any reason why not, because I’m allowed to do it. The law is 100 percent on my side.”
Conservatives have expressed concern about the use of a national emergency declaration to secure funding for Trump’s prized border wall, with some saying it would set a dangerous precedent for the loophole in the future.
