Just weeks away from the midterm elections that will determine which party controls leadership in the House, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan spoke briefly about the upcoming “fight” over funding for President Donald Trump’s border wall on Monday and suggested he didn’t know how it would be resolved.

“We intend on having a full-fledged discussion about how to complete this mission of securing our border, and we will have a big fight about that,” Ryan told reporters at the National Press Club on Monday, according to the Washington Post. “We’ll figure out how to do it in December. … I can’t speak to what the outcomes will be.”

While President Trump has hinted that he wanted to shut down the government over funding for his border wall, he has been encouraged by Republican leaders, including Ryan, that the battle will be best fought after midterm elections. Trump has lamented in interviews that he agreed with his party’s leadership, and signed a partial government funding package last month.
