WASHINGTON (AP) — Former presidential candidate Ron Paul is backing tea party favorite Chris McDaniel and his bid to oust longtime Republican Sen. Thad Cochran.

McDaniel’s campaign on Monday announced the former congressman was adding his name to a growing list of Republicans backing him ahead of the June 24 runoff. That contest has illustrated the split within the GOP between establishment-minded figures and those like Paul who have fought the system.

Paul’s son, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, has not endorsed a candidate in the runoff.

McDaniel planned events Monday in Wiggins, Gautier and D’lberville.
