GOP Texas Congressman Dismisses Trump’s Wall: ‘It Just Doesn’t Work’

Rep. Will Hurd (R-TX), who represents a district along the southern border, on Tuesday threw cold water on Donald Trump’s proposal to build a huge wall at the U.S.-Mexico border.

“You can’t build a wall from sea to shining sea. It just doesn’t work. It’s the most expensive way to do border security, and it’s the least effective,” Hurd said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

The congressman said that drug traffickers have even built ramps so that they can easily pass over the existing fence in certain areas.

“We need to allow the men and women in border patrol to adjust their tactics, techniques and procedures as they see fit. You can’t have a one-size-fits-all solution,” Hurd added.

The Republican congressman did concede that “in heavy populated areas, a wall absolutely makes sense.”

  1. I’m getting pretty sick of ‘build a wall’ as immigration policy… where did these bozos study immigration policy?

it seems that they learned from the former Iron Curtain policy and East Germany… the Berlin Wall was torn down for a reason…

  2. I’ve only lived in CA, TX, and AZ - all border states. “Build a wall!” has been a thing for as long as I can remember, going back decades. Same thing with “round em up and deport em all!”. It’s one of those things that’s been so thoroughly discussed that it’s a running joke in some border regions. Neither of those two things are solutions with any merit or feasible plan of action that would actually work. It’s about the equivalent to the “just nuke Mecca” crowd when discussing what to do about Islamic extremism. It’s lizard brain nonsense. Trump is either assuming his backwater supporters are idiots when he discusses his immigration policy, or he’s an idiot himself or both. A border-long “wall” is a non-starter.

  3. Wait wait wait—a Texan Republican congressman is questioning the real-world effectiveness of a simplistic solution to a non-existent problem that the Republican base finds emotionally satisfying? What is he, some sort of hate-mail fetishist? I has a confuse.

  4. He better watch that whole ‘making sense’ shit. It’s a slippery slope from there to making sound policy decisions, and then, horror! He’ll be labeled a Democrat!

  5. It was nice knowing you State Rep. Hurd. You opened your mouth, and something smart and practical came out! Career suicide for a Republican!! Next stop-unemployment line.
