A U.S. subsidiary of the Canadian insurance company Fairfax Financial Holdings gave a super PAC supporting Mitt Romney $1 million in August, The Canadian Press reports.
OdysseyRe gave the money to Restore Our Future on August 17, according to figures maintained by the Center for Responsive Politics.
Foreign-owned companies are barred from giving to super PACs, but Fairfax insisted to The Canadian Press that only American citizens employed by the American subsidiary were involved in the decision to donate.
“We had no role; the U.S. company is in fact our largest company, and they had business reasons for doing it, but we played no role at all,” Paul Rivett, Fairfax’s vice-president of operations, said.
