Two separate shootings in New York City on Thursday left three police officers wounded and one gunman dead, the New York Times reports.
One shooting, shortly after 7:30 p.m., took place at a Brooklyn subway station and involved two plainclothes transit officers and a man who was moving between train cars, which is a violation. The officers told the man that moving between cars is not permitted, removing their shields from under their bulletproof vests as they approached him. After asking him to exit the train, the man initially seemed to comply but then shot an officer once in each thigh and in the groin and the other officer once in the back. One of the wounded officers fired seven bullets at the man, killing him.
Earlier in the evening, four men attempted an armed robbery at a Bronx car dealership, which is owned by the family of a police officer who was off duty at the time. Only one of the men was armed. The robber was ultimately subdued by the officer and another employee, but the officer was shot in the leg. The gunman and his three accomplices were all arrested.
