The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee released a new aggressive ad on Monday attacking North Carolina House Speaker Thom Tillis, the Republican nominee for Senate in North Carolina, on contraception and his involvement in pushing controversial anti-abortion legislation through the state legislature.
The new ad released Monday and obtained by CQ-Roll Call features a woman identified as Moira Downey criticizing Tillis on birth control.
“He doesn’t care about women,” Downey said. “He would even make my birth control illegal. I’m angry that Thom Tillis doesn’t trust the women of North Carolina. I don’t know who Thom Tillis represents but it certainly is not me.”
The ad is the latest example of how Democrats’ battering Tillis on women’s issues is a key part of helping Sen. Kay Hagan (D-NC) maintain her slight but consistent lead over Tillis.
Tillis in September added his name to the list of Republicans who said they support easier access to over-the-counter contraception, a move Republicans hope will cut down the gender advantage of among voters Democrats like Hagan have kept.
As Roll Call notes, the ad is part of a $9.1 million statewide ad buy the DSCC made in August to help Hagan. The committee recently put in an additional $1 million to that amount after the National Republican Senatorial Committee announced that it would invest an extra $6 million in the race.
The TPM Polltracker average gives Hagan a 0.1 point lead over Tillis.
