Target has partially confirmed a report by tech blog The Verge that it is discontinuing sales of Amazon Kindle devices in its physical retail outlets after Mother’s Day 2012. As a Target spokesperson told TPM in a statement:

Target continually evaluates its product assortment to deliver the best quality and prices for our guests. Target is phasing out Amazon- and Kindle-branded products in the spring of 2012.  We will continue to offer our guests a full assortment of ereaders and supporting accessories.

But regarding the news that Amazon Kindle devices are not available for purchase on Target’s website at present, Target’s spokesperson told TPM: “While we have sold Kindle products in our stores dating back to 2010, we never sold Kindles on Target.com. Our website just had a page providing an overview of products that were available in stores.”

Target declined to elaborate on the reason why it will no longer carry Amazon Kindle devices in its stores after Spring 2012.
