Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s foreign minister, confirmed on Thursday that the Russian ship forced to turn back on Wednesday off the Scottish coast was carrying three helicopters to Syria. Lavrov also said the ship was carrying air defense equipment, but gave no further details.
Lavrov, who claimed the shipment was honoring a 2008 contract, said, “The ship was carrying air defense systems, which can be [used] only for repelling foreign aggression and not against peaceful demonstrators.”
