During a morning conference call featuring Congressmen Jeff Flake, Jason Chaffetz, and John Campbell, the trio slammed former House Speaker Newt Gingrich as an “unreliable leader,” despite not having served in the House during his leadership.

After being asked why they could assail Gingrich for promoting a culture of earmarks and exempt the current House Speaker John Boehner, who played a strong supporting role in the Newt era, the reply came that the explosion in earmarks (which Reagan hated, it was emphasized) “was really a product of Newt.”
