Florida Gov. Rick Scott’s (R) re-election campaign on Tuesday canceled a fundraiser centered around a private alligator hunt, the Tampa Bay Times reported.
The $25,000 per person event that was originally scheduled to be held Oct. 18 at New Smyrna Beach, Fla. drew questions over how enough permits would be provided to donors.
According to the Times, Scott deflected a question about the event on Tuesday but three hours later the head of his campaign organization announced that the fundraiser had been called off.
Beset by poor approval numbers, Scott faces an uphill climb in his re-election bid next year.
Polls have shown presumed challenger Charlie Crist, the former Republican governor of Florida who is now a Democrat, in a strong position to defeat Scott in 2014.
Scott’s fundraiser may have drawn interest from Sen. David Vitter (R-LA). The Louisiana senator’s super PAC hosted its own alligator hunt last weekend. Vitter posted a picture of his haul on his Facebook page.
